🗓️ Game week: May 18, 2025
The Bundesliga last round of the 2024/25 season lacked the usual drama – and for a good reason. The top of the table had already been decided weeks earlier. Bayern Munich were crowned champions long before the final matchday, with Bayer Leverkusen comfortably holding onto second place.
But behind them, there was still some movement that shaped the final standings and European spots.
The 2024/25 season saw Bayern Munich dominate from start to finish. While recent seasons gave hope to Dortmund, Leipzig, or even Leverkusen, this time there was no real title race. Bayern were simply on another level.
With clinical consistency, squad depth, and world-class performances, they finished first with a wide margin and secured another ticket to the UEFA Champions League.
Leverkusen put up a strong fight for much of the campaign but couldn’t keep up with Bayern’s ruthless pace. Still, their second-place finish means another chance to compete in the Champions League next season – a reward well-deserved for their attacking style and squad growth.
Arguably the best surprise of the season was Eintracht Frankfurt. With an away win against Freiburg in the final round, they locked in third place on the table. Their consistent performances and big-match mentality brought them back to Europe’s elite competition.
They showed composure when it mattered most – and will be returning to the Champions League with full momentum.
Thanks to Freiburg’s defeat, Borussia Dortmund had a golden chance to leapfrog into fourth place – and they took it without hesitation. A convincing 3:0 victory over Kiel ensured they finished just behind Frankfurt.
It wasn’t Dortmund’s best season overall, but finishing strong allowed them to reach their goal – Champions League football.
Freiburg had it in their hands, but the loss to Frankfurt in the Bundesliga last round meant they had to settle for fifth place. Still, considering their budget and expectations, it was a phenomenal season.
Their fifth-place finish grants them a spot in the Europa League – a fair outcome for their resilience throughout the year.
Mainz finished sixth and earned a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League. They weren’t consistent all season, but solid home form and late momentum helped them overtake better-known sides.
Perhaps the most shocking result of the Bundesliga last round came in Leipzig, where the hosts lost 2:3 at home to Stuttgart. That defeat pushed them completely out of European competition. For a team with Champions League ambitions, this collapse is a huge blow.
Stuttgart, on the other hand, will take pride in ending their campaign with a strong away win – though they fall short of European qualification.
It was heartbreak for Heidenheim (Relegation play-off), Kiel, and Bochum, who were all relegated to 2. Bundesliga. They couldn’t match the intensity and quality of the rest of the league, and despite some close results, they ended up in the drop zone.
| Position | Club | European Competition |
|---|---|---|

The Bundesliga last round didn’t bring chaos – but it delivered clarity. Bayern continue to dominate, while new contenders like Frankfurt and Mainz bring freshness to the European picture. For Leipzig, it’s back to the drawing board. For Dortmund and Freiburg – a sigh of relief and a glimpse at next season’s promise.
👉 The drama in Germany wasn’t the only one this weekend – France 1 last round also delivered a shocking finish that affected four teams with a single goal.
