France 1 Last Round – Drama, Tears, and European Dreams

🗓️ Matchday: May 18, 2025

PSG Already Champions – But Not Slowing Down

The France 1 last round was expected to be a quiet parade for Paris Saint-Germain. With the Ligue 1 title already secured and a Champions League final looming against Inter Milan, many assumed they’d rotate and take it easy.

But PSG doesn’t do casual.

Instead, they smashed Auxerre 3–1, showing no signs of holding back. Kvaratskhelia. K was electric, scored twice, the midfield ran riot, and the message was clear: they’re not just champions – they’re hunting for a treble. Auxerre, already doomed, had no answer.

Lille and Nice Seal Europe in Style

One of the biggest battles in the France 1 last round was for the European spots. Lille stepped up when it mattered most, securing a vital 2–1 win over Reims, locking in a place in European competition for next season.

Nice? They didn’t just win – they annihilated Brest 6–0. It was a complete show of dominance, finishing 4th in the table and qualifying for Champions League play-offs.

Lille ended 5th due to goal difference but will join the Europa League.

Strasbourg, Lyon, and Reims – One Goal Changed Everything

While the title was decided early, the real fireworks happened down the table – and in the final seconds of the France 1 last round.

In the match between Strasbourg and Le Havre, the score stood at 2–2 until the 95th minute. Lyon, who had won their match earlier, were anxiously watching. With the scoreline at 2–2, Strasbourg would go to Europe and Lyon would miss out.

But then…

Penalty for Le Havre in the 95th!
A. Touré stepped up – cold as ice – and slotted it in with precision in 99th minute.

That one goal had a domino effect:

  • Le Havre stayed up
  • Reims dropped to the relegation playoff
  • Lyon qualified for the Conference League
  • Strasbourg dropped below the European line

Four teams, one kick, total chaos.

Marseille and Monaco Secure Champions League Spots

Marseille finished 2nd with 65 points, showing incredible resilience in the final stretch. Monaco took 3rd with 61 points, earning direct UCL qualification.

Nice, in 4th, will head to the Champions League qualifying rounds, hoping to join them.

Meanwhile, Lille and Lyon completed the European picture – UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League.

 Extra Chance for Strasbourg?

There’s a twist. If PSG wins the French Cup, an additional European spot opens up for Ligue 1 teams.

That would mean Strasbourg could still sneak into Europe, despite missing out on the final day. Their fate now rests in PSG’s hands.

Who’s Going Down?

The final standings at the bottom are just as emotional:

  •  Montpellier – relegated
  •  St-Étienne – relegated
  •  Reims – to the playoff
  •  Le Havre – saved by Touré’s penalty

What a night.
